Cars are expensive to buy and they’re expensive to repair. Because of this, most people try to buy cars with a reputation for reliability. Getting a reliable vehicle usually means spending less money on repairs and having a car that lasts longer. In other words, you get more bang for your buck. Thankfully, it’s easier than ever to find the most reliable car brands as long as you’re willing to do a little research.
How Do You Find the Most Reliable Car Brand?
To help you make a great decision when looking for the most reliable car brand, we did our homework. We consulted with industry experts, reviewed repair information, and checked different models and model years for recalls. We also took into account different budgets. After all, every driver wants a dependable vehicle for work, errands, and vacations.
Your daily needs play a role in any purchase decisions. Construction workers need a truck even if cars are technically more reliable. Families these days like compact SUVs because of how versatile they are.
What Is the Most Reliable Car Brand?

Not all industry leaders agree 100%, but certain car brands tend to lead the pack year after year.
Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports ranks vehicle brands based on reports from current owners and repair data. First, here are the top 10 in order: Lexus (#1), Toyota, Mini, Acura, Honda, Subaru, Mazda, Porsche, BMW, and Kia (#10). It’s not surprising to see beloved brands like Toyota, Subaru, and Kia in the top 10.
There were interesting takeaways from this year’s study. CR found that electric vehicles have nearly 80% more problems compared to gas-powered models, but hybrids are the opposite. Hybrids tend to need repairs 25% less often.
J.D. Power
In its 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, J.D. Power crowns Lexus, Porsche, and BMW for luxury vehicles and names Toyota the winner of the consumer-friendly segment. Buick comes in second place, with Mini and Chevrolet tied for third. Lexus and Toyota are both frequent favorites in J.D. Power dependability rankings.
One interesting tidbit from J.D. Power’s report is that vehicles are becoming less reliable overall. Many of the problems are related to the increased technology tied to vehicles, such as infotainment devices and driver-assist features.
U.S. News & World Report
U.S. News put together two reliability ranking lists for 2024 — one for new vehicles and another for used ones. We like these lists because they’re filled with hardworking vehicles for average Americans. Many families depend on buying pre-owned to make their budget work.
The list of most reliable new vehicles included the Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, Chevy Equinox, Blazer and Silverado 2500 HD, Dodge Ram 1500, GMC Terrain, Nissan Murano, Nissan Titan, and Lexus GX. All had excellent reliability scores of 88 to 90/100.
For used cars, U.S. News recommended the:
- 2019 Kia Rio (91/100)
- 2017 Buick Regal (91/100)
- 2019 Kia Sportage (91/100)
- 2021 Chrysler 300 (92/100)
- 2022 Lexus IS (92/100
- 2020 Chevy Sonic (93/100)
- 2021 Nissan Maxima (93/100)
- 2017 Lexus ES and ES Hybrid (96/100)
It’s good to know that there are plenty of affordable, reliable brands. Kia, Toyota, and Chevrolet are longtime favorites, and their reputation for quality has stood the test of time.
What Is the Most Dependable Car Brand in Our Opinion?

At autopom!, we try not to play favorites. That said, over the years, we’ve noticed some brand names pop up more often than others. Here are a few highlights.
1. Kia
Kia is an exceptional automaker with a reputation for quality and dependability. The brand’s warranty is among the best we’ve seen, covering a whopping 10 years or 100,000 miles of coverage for the powertrain and 60,000 miles for bumper-to-bumper repairs. The Kia Rio, Kia Soul, and Kia Forte all deliver excellent long-term performance, and any repairs tend to be minor and inexpensive.
2. Toyota
How could we disagree with so many industry leaders? Toyota has a well-deserved reputation for dependability, from major systems to small parts. It’s kind of funny that many “most dependable” lists have multiple Toyota models competing against each other for the top spot. Take your pick: The Toyota Highlander, RAV4, Corolla, Prius, and Camry all average over 85/100 in reliability.
3. Chevrolet
Chevy offers a wide range of reliable vehicles for different needs. Customers who live in the country or traverse (wink) rough worksites often choose heavy-duty Chevy Colorado or Silverado 2500HD pickup trucks. The 2023 Colorado scored an amazing 9/10 from Car and Driver.
The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe is still a legend. It combines reliability, cargo space, legroom, oomph, and everything else families want in a forever vehicle.
4. Subaru
Subaru is the Keanu Reeves of vehicle brands. A little quirky, always dependable, and plenty of fun to watch. Both the Subaru Outback and Forester have spectacular reliability ratings, and owners love them. They practically have a cult following at this point. The only downside we can think of is the cost of replacement parts.
Want To Make the Most Reliable Car Brands Even More Reliable?
Whether you spring for a Lexus or go with a good old Toyota, a vehicle protection plan can be a smart investment for cars that are past their prime. VPPs give families peace of mind on vacation and during daily commutes. Even the most reliable vehicles can end up with unexpected problems once they hit 100,000 miles.
A vehicle protection plan covers the cost of certain repairs and problems after the original manufacturer’s warranty expires. One of these plans may pay for themselves with only one big car repair bill. Even better, with the included roadside assistance, you can pull over to the side of the road and let a professional take care of the heavy lifting safely.
