Broker or Direct Provider: What Actually Changes

CarShield sells its own branded plans. If a CarShield plan does not fit your vehicle, mileage or budget, there is no alternative to offer you.
autopom! does not administer anything itself. It compares plans from five separate administrator programs and recommends the one that fits. If one administrator prices a vehicle poorly, another may not, and because autopom! does not make the coverage decision itself, it can advocate separately with the administrator when a claim is questioned or needs clarification.

Neither model is simply better. A direct provider can sometimes price more aggressively with no intermediary. A broker adds a layer of comparison and advocacy, which is worth something different to different buyers.

Two True Month to Month Programs

CarShield offers one house month to month plan. autopom! now offers two, from different administrators, with different coverage structures.

CAPS M2M has no maximum entry mileage for vehicles 20 model years or newer. Coverage tier is set by the vehicle’s mileage at the time of breakdown: Ultimate under 75,000 miles, Deluxe from 75,000 to 125,000, Powertrain Plus from 125,001 to 200,000, and Engine-only coverage above 200,000 miles.

Aegis M2M works on the same principle with different tiers. On our test Honda Accord, the applicable tier was Total Assure, which applies up to 125,000 miles at the time of breakdown, at $183.36 initial and $91.68 per month, including Bonus Coverage, Luxury Electronics and Market Labor Rate at no additional cost. On our test Ford F-150, the applicable tier was Mileage Max, which applies once the vehicle passes 150,000 miles, at $211.06 initial and $105.53 per month. Neither CAPS nor Aegis offered a month to month option for our test Toyota RAV4, which illustrates that M2M availability varies by vehicle.

As with CAPS, Aegis coverage is set by mileage at the time of breakdown rather than at purchase, so which tier applies can change over the life of the contract.

The aggregate limits are structured differently, and the raw numbers can be misleading on their own. CarShield’s $10,000 aggregate applies per monthly contract term because each renewal is a new one- month contract, the aggregate effectively refreshes with each renewal. CAPS’s $11,300 aggregate and Aegis’s aggregate (based on the vehicle’s ACV at purchase for Total Assure, or tied to the contract term for Mileage Max) are both cumulative across the continuing contract rather than resetting monthly. A lower headline number does not necessarily mean a lower limit over time; it depends on how long the contract runs and how the limit is structured.

What to Check Before Choosing Either

  • 1

The sample contract, not the sales summary exclusions, deductible, waiting period, limit of liability

  • 2
Who administers the plan and who authorises repairs
  • 3
Whether your preferred repair facility is accepted
  • 4
    Cancellation and transfer terms
  • 5

Frequently Asked Questions

No. CarShield does not sell in California. autopom! is a licensed California MBI producer and sells there.
It depends on the vehicle, term and plan. In our fixed-term comparison, autopom!’s CAPS Diamond plan had a lower total cost and a lower deductible than CarShield’s equivalent monthly plan projected over
the same period
autopom! works with several administrator programs, including Aegis, CAPS, BeeCovered, Headstart and
NAAC. Which one applies depends on the plan you choose.
Yes, through two separate programs — CAPS and Aegis — each with its own mileage-based coverage tiers.

Both offer cancellation options; review the specific contract for terms, fees and any prorated refund.

If you want a broad range of CarShield-branded plans and a straightforward month-to-month structure, CarShield is worth a quote. If you want to compare contracts from multiple administrators — including two separate true month-to-month programs — support if a claim is questioned, or you live in California, autopom! may be the more practical fit. Whichever you choose, read the sample contract rather than the sales summary, and check the deductible, the waiting period and the aggregate limit before you sign.
