Reliability is an important factor when you’re shopping for any new or used vehicle, but it plays an especially critical role in trucks. As a truck owner, you want something you can count on: a hard-working vehicle that delivers consistent performance for decades in any climate. This list can help you find the most reliable truck models and avoid vehicles with a history of problems.
What Are the Most Reliable Trucks?
Reliable trucks are built to last, with heavy-duty features that can handle rugged work conditions. Great trucks should last well over 200,000 miles with proper maintenance. You shouldn’t have to worry about any powertrain issues for at least 125,000 to 150,000 miles.
1. Toyota Tacoma
Toyota and reliability go hand-in-hand, and not just when it comes to sedans and SUVs. Toyota led the pack in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, and the Tacoma was the top-rated midsize pickup truck.
A redesign in 2024 gave the Tacoma a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that combines fuel efficiency with 270 hp, 310 lb-ft of torque, and 6,500 lbs of towing capacity. Where the Toyota Tacoma really shines is how well its older models hold up in real-world repair data. Consumer Reports gave it perfect reliability scores in 2021 and 2022.
2. Toyota Tundra
The Tundra sits at the top of many most reliable pickup truck lists in the light-duty truck category. It has a strong reputation for quality and durability across all three of its generations (from 2001 to the present). Its average annual repair costs are just $600, which is phenomenal considering the average for trucks is closer to $950 a year.
3. Chevy Colorado
The Chevrolet Colorado has several Motortrend Truck of the Year awards under its belt, not to mention fantastic reliability scores from Car and Driver, J.D. Power, and other industry leaders. This midsize truck has been consistently reliable throughout most of its history (except 2015 to 2018), especially for engine and transmission performance. This is pretty incredible considering that the Colorado has offered so many different engines, including turbocharged I-4s, 3.6-liter V-6s, and a 5.3-liter V-8.
4. Chevrolet Silverado HD

Both the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the rugged HD version offer outstanding reliability. Silverado 1500s with a turbocharged I-4 engine deliver 310 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet also offers a 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8 that lives up to its reputation of long-lasting powertrains.
The 2500 HD doesn’t have the sleekest appearance, but it excels in raw power, towing capacity, and durability. A Duramax turbodiesel V-8 offers a whopping 470 hp, 975 lb-ft of torque, and 20,000 lbs of max towing power. The standard gas V-8 hits up to 16,000 lbs. Owners have reported problems with brakes and paint, but the engine and transmission are reliable to the moon and back.
5. GMC Sierra
Older GMC Sierras (especially 2014 and 2015) weren’t exactly the most reliable trucks, but starting in 2018, that changed. The Sierra 1500 earned great quality scores of 85/100 and higher from J.D. Power and an Editor’s Choice Award from Car and Driver.
Both the 4.3-liter V-6 and 5.3-liter V-8 engines offer smooth highway driving, pulling power, and load-hauling capabilities, making them popular with DIY enthusiasts and construction workers. The max towing capacity depends on the engine but tops out at around 9,000 lbs.
6. Nissan Frontier
The Nissan Frontier is a strange character when it comes to reliability. It’s rarely in the middle. Depending on the model year, it either sits at the top or near the bottom.
For example, Consumer Reports rated the 2022 model a dismal 8/100 for reliability and 1/5 for owner satisfaction. As the first year of a redesign, this isn’t surprising.
The next year, J.D. Power gave the 2023 model an excellent 84/100 for reliability. Many owners gave the 2023 Frontier five-star quality ratings. Car and Driver called the 2024 model “the best Frontier to date.”
Overall, the Frontier lands in the best trucks category thanks to its extremely low average ownership costs — just $470 annually compared to $550 for most midsize trucks. It also has relatively few serious repair issues or recalls over the years.

What Are the Least Reliable Trucks?

While some trucks are known for long-term reliability, others have been plagued by recurring mechanical issues. Serious issues are often engine-specific, and long-term reliability also depends heavily on how well the owner maintains it. Here are a few models that have raised concerns among owners and experts.
7. Nissan Titan
The Titan is far from the worst pickup truck. It enjoys relatively few owner complaints most of the time. Certain model years got the short end of the stick, though, from rear axle failure in 2004 to control module failure in 2017. These issues aren’t common, but they’re very expensive.
8. Ram 1500
The Ram 1500 can be a fantastic truck — recent years keep pulling consecutive 10/10s from Car and Driver — but some of its engines were horrifically bad. There’s the 3.0-liter Ecodiesel from 2015-2016 that fails at less than 80,000 miles on average, or the 4.7-liter Magnum V-8 from 2002 with oil sludge buildups in the engine. Oh, and the infamous failures of the Totally Integrated Power Module that plagued the 2011 models and caused major issues with starters, fuel pumps, cooling fans, brakes, and airbags.
9. Ford F-150 Hybrid and Lightning Models
The Ford F-150 has been one of the most popular trucks in the U.S. for a long time, though its reliability isn’t always consistent. Ford’s electric trucks have especially poor reliability ratings, with the F-150 Hybrid scoring just 7/100 on Consumer Reports review. Even though the Ford F-150 Lightning has only been out for a few years, it already has a dozen recalls.
